Baby Hiatus

Hello Allover Art fans! The Allover Art blog is going on a hiatus for a few months (actually, it kind of already has since the post before this one is dated from February). As I get closer to my due date of May 22nd I'm whittling down the time I spend on Allover Art. The online shop will still be open until I go into labor, and then be closed for a few weeks. After those first few weeks with a newborn baby in the house, the online shop will reopen. Then in August I will resume taking custom orders, which will include oil paint pet portraits! Hooray! It's been so long since I've been able to create some oil paintings that I'm really looking forward to it. There is already a waiting list for oil paint pet portraits, so if you think you may be interested please feel free to contact me.

I will continue to update the Allover Art fan page (in fact, there will be a pre-baby sale this weekend!) as the weeks go by, so be sure to check there for all the latest updates. See you back here in a few months!

New Funky Ring Bases!

No longer do you have to settle for the bronze base; now you have a choice! Each ring base is hypoallergenic, made from acrylic with an electroplated finish. Unfortunately I don't have any new pieces listed with the new ring bases yet since they just arrived today, but you can see them out in the "Build Your Own Funky Ring" listing in my shop. Sustainable Forestry

Here at Allover Art (as well as in my personal life) I strive to be as environmentally conscious and eco-friendly as possible. Some of my efforts include incorporating dried paint from my palette into new pieces of wearable art, using environmentally-friendly paints, using supplies that can be recycled or reused, using recycled packaging or as little packaging as possible when shipping, and using wood from sustainable forestry in each unique piece of wearable art.

What exactly is "sustainable forestry" you might wonder. Sustainable forestry means managing our forest resources to meet the needs we have today without interfering with our future generations' needs. According to the Cornell Forestry Extension Program, this might be the value of hardwood timber or softwood fiber growing, it might be the diversity of native species present, it might be recreational opportunities provided in the region, or it might be the socio-economic culture that has developed around a local wood using industry. Sustainable forestry addresses all the resources provided by the forest. Someone probably advised you at some point to "not burn your bridges", and this advice is at the heart of sustainable forestry where you strive to retain all your options. This includes the option for timber or fiber production, the option for certain species, the option for jobs, the option for clean water, the option for recreational resources, and the option for aesthetic qualities. Because forests change, by the nature of forests, sustainability emphasizes the need to keep viable all the options and opportunities.

Hopefully you can now enjoy wearing your Allover Art jewelry even more knowing that steps were taken to create as little an impact on the environment as possible. :)

I have a new and growing obsession with diaper bags, specifically the ones on Etsy. I always enjoy peruseing the amazing and unique selection of purses available on Etsy, but with a bun in the oven I have another excuse to spend countless hours browsing through pages and pages of handmade goodies. I already own a purse and a clutch from different Etsy sellers and I loooooove them, so it would make sense that I would go to the Etsy community for my diaper bag needs.

Hello friends! Allover Art has been MIA for some time now, and I'm sorry if you've been wondering where I've been. Here's what's been going on.

On the morning of Thursday, the 21st we woke up with a very lethargic and sad-looking puppy. Indie, our 11-month old Beagle/Terrier mix, was not acting like himself when the night before he seemed just fine. He had to be coaxed downstairs to go out when usually he's the first one up in the morning. He was very lethargic and just stood in one place looking at me with his ears back; and then promptly vomited up his undigested dinner from the night before. I took him outside to go to the bathroom and it appeared that there was blood in his urine (SCARY!). I brought him back inside and called the vet and Matt, my husband, took him in to see the doc about an hour later.

The vet said that Indie had a fever and was dehydrated. They gave him antibiotics and an IV and the fever went down. They also said that he was auto-agglutinating, which meant that his body was attacking his own red blood cells. They decided to run a panel of blood work to rule out infections and tick-borne illnesses while he spent two nights with the vet. We visited him on his second day at the vet and he seemed happy to see us and ate some food, but was tired. At this time his PCV (pack cell volume) count was around 16/17. The PCV count measures the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells. The normal PCV count in dogs is 37-55. Indie was anemic at this point but not in serious danger.

Early Saturday morning we got a phone call from the vet shortly after they opened saying that Indie was in really bad shape and needed an emergency blood transfusion. His PCV count was at 8. How his PCV count was allowed to get down so low that it was an emergency situation and that he was beginning to suffocate makes me very angry, but that is another story. We were told to come to the vet and pick him up so that we could drive him to the emergency clinic at the NC State Veterinary School for a transfusion. Matt and I picked up Indie and drove him to NC State, wondering the entire time if he was even going to make it because he looked that bad.

At NC State he received an emergency transfusion and oxygen and we were able to see him afterward. I've never been so happy to see his tail wag; he looked sooooooo much better. Later that day he received another transfusion.

Indie was in the ICU at the NC State Veterinary Hospital from Saturday, the 23rd, through Thursday, the 28th. During his stay he received a third transfusion, lots of drugs and steroids, had an ultrasound, and had a spleen aspirate to rule out cancer while they ran various tests trying figure out what sent his immune system into overdrive. We drove over twice every day to visit with him. It was a very emotional and stressful week.

On Thursday, the 28th, Indie's PCV count had been holding steady around 19/20 for over 48 hours so he was allowed to come home to recover. He was diagnosed with idiopathic Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). This means that nobody has any idea what caused his body to begin attacking his red blood cells. He was sent home on activity restriction with lots of meds, including Heparin injections. Friday, the 29th, Indie returned to the hospital for a blood panel screening and his PCV count was 21/22; he will return to the hospital again on Monday, the 1st, for another blood panel screening.

In the meantime, Indie is still attacking his red blood cells but at a MUCH slower rate, which means that the steroids and immuno-suppressant drugs are beginning to take effect. He will remain on the drugs and activity restriction for quite some time until a marked improvement in his PCV count has been shown and maintained. He will still be on the drugs for some time, if not permanently. Since Indie has been home he has done A LOT of sleeping, which is great. We are all happy to have him home. Unfortunately, we are by no means "out of the woods" yet. Thirty percent of IMHA patients fully recover and never relapse, another 30% recover and then have relapses later in life, and then another 40% never leave the hospital. Thankfully it seems that we are not in the later 40% (knock on wood). The good news is that once an animal recovers from IMHA he has great quality of life with no lingering effects from the incident. Once Indie gets his PCV count out of the anemic range he will feel just like his usual rascally self.

So, that's where I've been. It's been a long and stressful week with me thinking lots of positive thoughts to help out Indie and not cause undo stress on the little one growing inside of me. I should be able to remove my Etsy shop from vacation mode starting this week and be able to get back into work while keeping an eye on Indie. I will also continue to keep you updated on his progress with hopefully lots of good news.

PS - If you have a pet, I strongly encourage you to look into pet insurance. We have a policy for both Indie and Kasey with Petplan and we honestly never thought we would have to use it for Indie. Pet insurance has been a life-saver, literally.

**UPDATE** As of Tuesday, February 2nd, Indie's PCV count is up to 35! Hooray!

It seems that someone gave me the gift of a cold virus this Christmas; and it has set up camp in my body, refusing to leave. Art After Dark In Holly Springs

Here's your last chance to see Allover Art in person before the end of the year. I'll be at the Holly Springs Cultural Center tomorrow, Friday the 11th, from 6-8 pm with all my wearable art for the monthly Art After Dark reception. My paintings are already hanging in the Cultural Center and will be through the end of December; but that's not ALL that's happening in downtown Holly Springs this Friday evening.

Downtown Holly Springs is hosting Main Street Christmas from 6-8 pm! According to the the Holly Springs paper downtown Holly Springs celebrates the season with Christmas carols, a live nativity, hayrides, and other free festivities at Four Oaks Bank, Shelly Lane Gifts, Town Hall, and the Holly Springs Cultural Center. The celebration culminates in a tree lighting ceremony with Santa at the Holly Springs Cultural Center at 8 pm.

So come on by the Cultural Center from 6-8 pm and take a look at some wearable art, and cross some names off your Christmas list! I look forward to seeing you! :)

Holly Days 2009

I can't believe it's been an entire year since Holly Days 2008! It's seems like yesterday that I just started creating and selling my wearable art. Holly Days 2008 was the first major show I sold my wearable art at. Last year I only had pendants, and almost all were square. Now I have various pendant shapes and sizes, rings, earrings, brooches, pet portrait pendants, earrings, and bobby pins! Wow, my inventory has expanded.

This year Holly Days 2009 will be at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, just like last year, on December 5th and 6th. I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope to see you out there!

**And yes, the show is indoors. :)

Twelve Weeks

Surprise!

For those of you who have wondered why the Allover Art blog has been so neglected, here's the reason...I'm pregnant! Yay! For the past two months I have been so tired that I've needed to take a nap almost every day, which has caused a few things to fall to the wayside, one of which has been this blog. Over the next few weeks I should (notice that 'should' is in italics, haha) start to get some energy back and will hopefully return to the blogging world in full force. In the meantime, I hope you don't mind the sporadic blog posts.

Anyway, here's a little bit more about the tiny munchkin that has taken over my body. We (my husband Matt and I) found out that I was pregnant on September 14th. Besides causing mild nausea and food aversions on and off along with a little dizziness, the little one hasn't caused me too much discomfort. I am certainly getting plenty of sleep these days that's for sure. My due date is May 22nd and we've already had two appointments and ultrasounds. Here's the munchkin during the 8th week:

It's not much to look at in that sonogram; it kind of looks like an amorphous peanut. We did get to see the tiny little heart beating away at a healthy 167 bpm. It was surreal and good to know that there was indeed something in there and I wasn't crazy.

Today I saw the doc again, and everything couldn't be moving along more smoothly. Everything from my blood work to the munchkin's development couldn't be more perfect. Here's how the little guy is looking today during the 10th week:

It looks more like a baby! It does have a giant head at this point, which of course made it oh so easy for Matt to make a big head joke about yours truly.

It's good to have a friend in the professional photography business; especially when she loves my work and is willing to do a photo shoot for me. Meet April of Evoke Photography.

She is the BEST wedding, engagement, and boudoir photographer in the Triangle area here in NC. She is a very friendly, outgoing, and inspiring individual who does phenomenal work in the professional photography business. Check out some of her work here on her website.

All you dog-lovers out there will appreciate several of my posts over the next few days. ;) One of Indie's biological sister's is visiting us for a while. Her family is on vacation and we are pet-sitting Miss Bailey. Indie and Kasey are definitely enjoying the extra play time; there have been nonstop wrestling and barking matches all day long. Bailey is a huge instigator, barking and whining at Kasey until she gets up and runs after Bailey.

Workshop Wednesday - Crocheted Flower Earrings Tutorial With Jennifer White Designs

Today marks another installment of my weekly blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday will feature either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. This week's Workshop Wednesday features Jennifer of Jennifer White Designs. She has graciously put together a tutorial on how to create crocheted flower earrings.

Crocheted Flower Earrings Tutorial

You’ll need:

●Less than 1 ounce of yarn. I used Sugar ‘n Cream cotton in color Faded Denim, but any worsted weight yarn will work.

●Size G Crochet hook

●2 surgical steel earring hooks

●2 decorative beads or buttons

●Sewing thread in a color that coordinates with yarn color.

●Sewing needle

●Jewelry pliers

●2 3in. head pins

Stitches Used:

Chain stitch (Ch): Yarn over, pull yarn through loop on hook.
Double Crochet stitch (dc): Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, yarn over pull yarn through two loops on hook, yarn over, pull yarn through all remaining loops. One loop remains.
Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook.

Making the flower (Make 2):

Make a slip knot with yarn. Place the loop onto crochet hook and chain two. Turn.
Round 1: Work 5 double crochet in second chain from hook. Slip stitch into next stitch. You now have a small circle.

Round 2: Chain 3, (dc, ch 3, sl st) in same sc, (sl st, ch 3, dc, ch 3, sl st) in each sc around, sl st in first sl st to join–5 petals. Fasten off. Weave in any loose ends.

With thread and needle, sew decorative button or bead in center of flower. Repeat for 2nd flower as well.

Now take one of the 3 in. Head pins and use pliers to cut it in half.

Discard the flat end, (assuming you’re using the kind with a loop at one end) Next, slide head pin through the top stitch of one of the flower petals. Then, using pliers, bend pin up and toward the loop so that petal is secured onto head pin.

Next, take earring hook and attach the head pin loop to the bottom loop of hook.

Repeat for other earring and enjoy your funky new jewelry!!

Allover Art's main website has been made over! Thanks to GoDaddy.com's easy to use Website Tonight feature, I was able to revamp the look of my site with absolutely no knowledge of code. Even though I HATE GoDaddy.com's TV commercials, they do make it awfully easy to build and maintain your own website.

Workshop Wednesday

Today marks another installment of a my weekly blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday will feature either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. This week's Workshop Wednesday features Zemphira, who is graciously showing us how to create her fantastic reversible headbands.

How To Create A Reversible Headband, Zemphira-Style

You Will Need:

2 pieces of fabric that measure 19 inches by 3 inches
5 inches of elastic
template and tracing utensil, safety pin
iron, sewing machine, thread, scissors, & and chopstick

Step 1- Choose your fabric. I tend to use two fabrics that somewhat coordinate. Cut a 19x 3 inch rectangle from each fabric.

Step 2 - Put the two fabrics right sides together, and then fold them in half. Place the end of the template on the fold and then trace. Cut out the pieces on the line.

Step 3- Sew the two pieces of fabric together leaving the ENDS open as well as a 2 inch hole along one side. (sew 1/4 inch away from the edge)

Step 4 - Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through one end of the headband. Do not pull it all the way through, stop with a little bit of elastic hanging out of the end. Then sew down that end of the elastic - I backstitch over the elastic a few times. Then pull the elastic out the other end and sew it down. (right now the headband will be scrunched up and inside out)

Step 5- Turn the headband right-side out through the 2-inch hold you left on one of the long sides. Use a chopstick to push out the corners and along the seams. Iron the headband flat.

Step 6- Top-stitch a little less than a 1/4 inch all the way around the headband - make sure you pay extra attention when you are sewing the hole to be sure you close it up.

Step 7 - Wear your headband, give your headband away, and then create another!

Who are you (actual name/and or shop name)?

Natasha Reilly, creator of DoodleStars (although the Etsy address is http://Doodlestar.etsy.com The last “s” jumped ship during setup!)

What do you create?

I create handmade cards, hand-painted frames and mirrors, original wall art and journals. Sometimes we compare ourselves and our incredible creations to others and find ourselves lacking, so I strive to create pieces that carry a feeling of celebration and remind people that they are ridiculously fabulous and unique.

Where are you located?

I live in a little cottage – otherwise known as an apartment – in the middle of the Big Apple. I’m proud to say that I’m one of many nice Native New Yorkers. What? I swear, we really are! You wanna take this outside? Hahahaha.

When did you start creating?

I am a writer however I’ve always been obsessed with color and longed to create things like cards and journals. About twelve years ago, I created a piece with words and color that was picked up by Family Circle magazine. Then I stopped. There was no reason other than fear; I kept everything from poems to little characters hidden in journals. After completing an MFA in writing I sent my work out and it was received well. Then after the birth of my daughter, I decided I had to try my hand at creating products. So, I setup my first Etsy shop on December 2nd, 2008 and I haven’t looked back. This venture is a fusion of art and writing and even if I fail miserably I want my daughter to know that you need to follow your heart and your dreams in this life.

What inspires you?

The physical world around me like ocean waves, seashells, the moon, the stars, the sound of raindrops hitting leaves, etc., inspires me. People like you and all the talented artists I have met inspire me more than words can say. There is something so amazing about talking with someone who loves what they do. Whether they are driving a truck, painting, walking dogs or sky writing, whatever it is I am inspired when I see another person’s passion for what they do. I am also deeply moved by the people in my life and those that reach out to help others for no other reason than genuine care for your fellow being.

What is the most time consuming part of your craft?

Many of the cards I make – including the card packs – are made by hand so it takes time to gather all the little pieces and put them together. However, when I think “time-consuming” the idea of promotion is the first thing that comes to mind. It’s incredible how much hard work goes into getting the word out. It’s like standing in the middle of a packed school yard at lunchtime and trying to get folks to listen to a joke. It’s easy to get drowned out by all the other voices.

What is your favorite place to visit in your hometown and why?

That’s hard – there are so many wonderful nooks and crannies in this city. There are two that I can’t decide between. The first is this one section of The Metropolitan Museum of Art that has a fountain and gorgeous stained glass windows. It’s so peaceful. I used to write there all the time – I even cut class a couple times in high school to go there to write! The other is this big rock in a little park near my childhood home which overlooks a lighthouse on the East River. Many of my favorite memories revolve around that rock.

What is your most popular item that you create (and why do you think it is so popular)?

The hippo being lifted by balloons card that I make gets lots of kudos. It’s hard to keep him in my shop! He’s just a simple hippo having fun and I think people connect with that idea.

How do you acquire new clients?

Haha…I’m not sure yet. Right now I spend a ton of time telling people about my shop and on Etsy I try to share my items in forums and respond to threads when people are looking for gifts. I’m learning everyday.

What's your next project going to be?

I have two projects. I’m working on a new line of cards – including an awesome birthday pack - and I’m working hard to finish writing a book.

What types of things do you do to turn first time buyers into repeat clients?

You know I really struggle with “selling”. I make things that I love and I hope people like them. Each and every time there is a sale, I’m so flattered. I love getting to know my buyers so whether it’s a regular order or a custom order I sometimes chat with them in Etsy convos or over email. Once I know them a bit, I send them little treats with their order, useful things I think they’d enjoy. Sometimes based on our conversations or their purchase I will tell them about another item they might like that’s either in the shop or coming soon. I am not a salesman; I don’t believe in selling people things they don’t need. I just like to get to know folks, share my stuff and hope they come to play again.

What do you do when you are not creating?

When I’m not creating I’m hanging with my 22 month old daughter, going to the movies with my husband, spending time with family and awesome friends, eating too many M&M’s for my own good, listening to music, doing yoga, and keeping an ear out for good, naughty jokes.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Yes, I started a new blog called the Thursday Sweet Treat. It’s a playground for artists of all kinds and from all walks of life to stay motivated to create new works while having fun. I’d like to invite everyone to stop by cheer, play and enjoy.

Workshop Wednesday

Each week I run a blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday features either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. Today's Workshop Wednesday features tips for taking great pet photos" by Allover Art. ;)

When a customer is commissioning a pet portrait pendant or an oil paint pet portrait he or she often asks what photos I need to work from. To help you take better photos of your pets, whether you wish to have a portrait painted based on a photo or you just want a nice photo of your pet for your own use, I've created the "Top Ten Tips for Taking Great Pet Photos".

1) Have a friend or family member, someone that your pet is comfortable with, help you take the photo. It may help to have someone hold your pet in place or to hold a treat or favorite toy over your head while you take the photo.
2) Get as close as possible to your pet. The more detail you capture the better your picture will be.
3) Make sure that your camera is on the highest quality setting.
4) Only use the flash if absolutely necessary. Just like some people have "red eye" in photos, some pets' eyes will "glow".
5) Pay attention to the lighting around your pet. Avoid taking photos in low light so that you don't have to use the flash.
6) Use a favorite toy, treat, or friend to help your pet look in the direction you want.
7) Take photos from many different angles. Sometimes extreme angles can create more interesting photos. Try shooting from above, below, and all sides of your pet.
8) If your pet is a dog, take him or her out for some exercise before taking the photo. This could get rid of extra energy making him or her more likely to listen to you. Also, sometimes when a dog is panting the corners of his or her mouth turn up creating a "smile".
9) Be sure that your pet is in a comfortable environment. Your pet will be on edge and not show it's true personality if it is unhappy or unsure of its surroundings.
10) Finally, take lots and lots of photos! The more photos you have, the more you have to choose from, therefore allowing for the creation of a pet portrait that really captures the spark of your pet's personality.

Today's featured artist is Amanda of SpawnStudio.

Who are you (actual name/and or shop name)?

I am Amanda Wright—the creative brains behind Spawn Studio.

What do you create?

For now, I create greeting cards and stationery. However, I have a basement full of paints, canvases, screen printing supplies, a sewing machine, and jewelry making supplies. So, I am planning to branch out in the future!

Where are you located?

I am located in Cary, North Carolina in our super cool 1971 A-frame house with my husband, Daniel, and our two schnauzer-poodle mix pups, Oliver and Mabel. More specifically Spawn Studio is located in the basement.

When did you start creating?

I started creating shortly after I popped into the world—usually with crayons or finger paint. I've known I wanted to be an artist of some sort since I was 6 years old. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you make something you are proud of. I took art classes throughout school, and in high school I sat with Ruth of Allover Art in art class for 3 years! I went to college at the NC State College of Design and loved every minute of it. I got my Bachelor of Graphic Design degree in 2006 and started working at a design firm. Unfortunately designing marketing pieces and websites didn't give me much creative freedom, so Spawn Studio was born!

Why did you choose your shop name?

Ah, my shop name. I decided I wanted to start my own business, but a year and a half later I was still trying to think of a name! I am such a perfectionist that I got completely caught up on finding the right name and I couldn't move forward. Finally, my husband suggested that I start working on some products for my shop and stop worrying about the name. (Sometimes he's a pretty smart fellow.) As I brainstormed, ideas for my shop exploded out of my head, and those ideas led to other ideas, and those ideas spawned other ideas and on and on. So "Spawn" seemed to be an appropriate name for my studio!

What inspires you?

I am inspired by everything I see and anything that makes me laugh, but I truly believe that inspiration comes from God. I don't think I could come up with anything good on my own!

What is the most time consuming part of your craft/art?

The most time consuming part of my work is developing the illustrations/designs for each piece. But, this is the fun part of the process so I don't mind it at all! I like to do it curled up on the couch between my dogs with a good old black and white movie playing in the background. I don't particularly enjoy the printing/scoring/folding/trimming part of the process, so sometimes that seems to be the most time consuming even though it isn't.

What is your favorite place to visit in your hometown and why?

There aren't too many interesting places to visit in Raleigh/Cary, NC so I suppose my favorite place to visit is my parents' house! My Mom always makes my husband and I a delicious meal with a scrumptious dessert. After the meal we nap on the couch and maybe play a board game or two. Hmm. I must be getting old—board games and a nap?!

What is your most popular item that you create (and why do you think it is so popular)?

So far, my most popular item (based on number of purchases) has been the "Happy Valentine's Day from my Boobs" card. I think it's popular because it's different than any card you can pick up at Hallmark or Target...and hey, there are boobs on the front.

How do you acquire new clients?

I acquire new clients through word of keyboard!

What's your next project going to be?

The next project on my to do list is to get my website and blog up and running by the end of June. (The url will be www.spawnstudio.com) My perfectionism is getting in the way again, and I need to just build it and get going instead of obsessing over the design!

My other next projects will be invitations of all sorts! Wedding, Wedding Shower, Baby Shower, Surprise Party, etc...

Oh, and my OTHER next project will be to do a painting a 4' x 3' canvas to hang in our living room. But, it's hard to get away from the computer—I need my "undo" button!

What types of things do you do to turn first time buyers into repeat clients?

First of all I try to make sure that my product is super high quality, so that no one could ever be disappointed with their purchase. I also include handwritten thank you notes with each shipment and email updates with tracking information for orders shipping within the US. As someone who buys almost everything online, I know that tracking information is very important. I also hope that by consistently adding new items to my shop I can persuade buyers to come back for more!

What do you do when you are not creating?

When I'm not creating I am working on updating our home. Old people lived here before us and the 70's flowered wall paper and brass light fixtures have to go. I think interior design is kind of like graphic design in 3D! I also enjoy wrestling with my dogs and playing xbox with my husband. Workshop Wednesday With House Of Mouse

My studio is finally finished! I can't believe how much I have missed having my own creative space to work in. It is 10 times better than it was before. I have added loads of extra storage space - who would have thought the materials for making tiny little mice would take up so much room?! The walls are plastered - no more bumpy peeling wallpaper, yay! I have a nice new wooden floor. Now I can get on with crafting more mice than ever before. I hope you enjoy this tour around my shiny new studio.

Lots of new shelves and cabinets. Can you spot ArtMind's babushka dolls on my shelves? I think I need to buy some more soon. I love wind chimes and dreamcatchers hanging from my window. I wish I had more room for plants too.

My little photo corner with my light boxes. Soon I am going to write a tutorial on how to make a light box and use photo editing software to get your photos looking bright and beautiful.

My ribbon board is full! I think I am going to need to make another one soon. I have a little tool box full of beads and flowers, it is hanging on the wall under my pin board. I put my writing board on the wall and forgot to wipe off the old writing. It looks very odd with the writing on sideways! My new favourite addition to my work table is a pair of magnetic strips of metal on the wall. I can stick all my scissors too it and keep them out of my way.

Indie Is Four Months Old!

Indie, our beagle mix rescue puppy is four months old today. He is still quite the handful. When we got him he was six weeks old and 3 1/2 pounds.

Now he's four months old and over thirteen pounds!

We're still playing the guessing game when it comes to figuring out what his other half is. Right now we are thinking he has some Jack Russell in him. Others have suggested that he could be part Rat Terrier or a Spaniel of sorts. What do you think?

Workshop Wednesday With Live*Lovely

Today marks another installment of my weekly blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday will feature either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, a snapshot of an artist's creative process, or a peek into their creative space. This week's Workshop Wednesday features a tutorial by Live*Lovely Dress Shop.

How to make a cute scarf for your hair

This is a great project because not only is it a great accessory to wear, it also helps you use up some of those awkward scraps you sometimes wind up with after sewing.

You’ll need:

A pretty scrap of fabric big enough to cut into a 32” by 6” rectangle
A tape measure
Scissors
A sewing machine and thread
An iron and ironing board

Step 1.
Cut your fabric into a rectangle measuring 6” by 32”. (This fits the average size noggin, but just to be sure you could use your tape measure to measure the circumference of your head where you would wear the scarf and then add a total of 8 ½ inches to that—4 for each side to tie, plus seam allowance.)

Step 2.
Fold the fabric in half right side to right side across the short end so it’s a long skinny rectangle, with the back of the fabric out.

Step 3.
Sew the edges together along one short side and the long side opposite the fold. Leave a small seam allowance (¼”) so there isn’t a ton of bunching later. STOP before you totally close it. [insert 04] You need to leave one side open so you can turn it inside out. Definitely have zoned out and sewed the whole thing before. As my grandmother used to say, “As you sew, so shall you rip.” : )

Step 4.
Turn it inside out so you can see the pretty side of the fabric.

Step 5.
Now you will have a frumpy and frayed looking hairscarf.

You need to iron it! Start ironing at the closed end.

When you get to the other end, turn the frayed edges under about ¼”. Then iron them that way so they will stay while you sew it closed.

Step 6.
Sew the turned under edges together.

Tada! A new hairscarf for you. I make at least one of these for just about every dress I sew.

I love that when you just tie it in a regular knot I winds up looking like a bow. I haven’t found the right outfit to go with it to wear the bow in front yet, but I think it could be really cute!

This weekend my husband and I took him and his sister Kasey to the dog park, and it was Indie's first time there. At first he was a little hesitant, but then he believed himself to be just as big as his 100 pound sister.

Who are you (actual name/and or shop name)?

I’m Carolyn and I’m the founder of CeeGee Jewellery Design

What do you create?

I make handcrafted sterling silver jewellery from my home workshop.

Where are you located?

I live in a village in Cheshire, England. I’m just south of Manchester.
When did you start creating?

After spending a hectic decade after university living and working in central London, my husband and I moved up to Cheshire, about 45 minutes from where I grew up. I had trouble finding a similar role to the job I was doing in London, and decided to see if I could do something completely different. 18 months on I miss my old salary but absolutely love what I do! I feel really lucky to be able to do something I really enjoy every day.

Why did you choose your shop name?

My shop name is a derivative of my initials. It was the name I came up with when I was just testing the water really to see if things would work out, and I wanted something personal but professional sounding. I often wish I’d chosen something a bit more interesting and quirky, but I’m kind of stuck with it now! It works well in directories though as it gets me near the top of alphabetical lists!

What inspires you?

Pretty much everything! I try not to be too led by current fashions as I don’t want my jewellery to date, but am influenced by trends. My biggest inspiration is probably the changing seasons – they really affect my mood and the colours I want to use.

What is the most time consuming part of your art/craft?

The whole marketing side of things. I had no idea when I started how much time I would have to spend online, working on my website and trying to get my business name out there. Marketing on a teeny budget isn’t fun!

What's your next project going to be?

I’ve used lampwork beads in my work for some time and absolutely love them. I’m constantly amazed at the talented glass artists out there. I’ve recently started teaching myself to make them and am hooked! I’m in the process of clearing out my garden shed to insulate it and set it up as a permanant lampwork studio. I can’t wait to get it finished so I can get lots of practice in and start using my own beads in my designs. Recently I went on a metal clay course, which I really enjoyed. I’ve just launched the first of my silver clay jewellery on my website and plan to add to the range soon.

What types of things do you do to turn first time buyers into repeat clients?

I always make sure that as well as my business card, I include a card in the gift wrapping that references the business, to help customers remember where they bought their jewellery from. This is something low key that would be suitable to include if it’s a gift. The next stage along from that is getting my business name printed on the gift wrapping but I’m not quite there yet as I have to keep my costs down. I always get the customer on my mailing list where possible so I can keep them informed about new designs and offers. Apart from that I just try to offer excellent customer service so they want to come back and shop with me again!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

At the beginning of this year I started writing a blog, Trinkets and Treasure (www.CeeGeeJewellery.blogspot.com) which covers what’s happening in my business, and also features other indie designers and websites. I love the whole handmade ethos and hope it goes some way to spreading the word! Craft still has a bit of a fusty, dated image in the UK, but there are signs that we’re making progress in proving it’s not all village halls and tea cosies, and giving it a new lease of life. There are a number of UK handmade marketplace sites springing up, but it remains to be seen which will emerge as the best. I’m involved in a promotion at the moment for one of the newest UK pretenders to the Etsy throne, www.Corinadr.com. It’s a great looking site with some fantastic shops. Do check it out!

My Springtime Scene Hand-Painted Art Pendant Necklace is the item from my shop that Etsy has chosen to include in this collection. The original miniature painting is created with high quality acrylic paints on a wooden tile. The painting is then sealed on every surface, and then receives a high-gloss resin finish which gives it a very polished look. The finished effect is similar to that of a heavy glass pendant, but it is actually very lightweight. Workshop Wednesday

Each Wednesday will feature either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. This week's Workshop Wednesday features Karen of TuscaloosaRoad. She has put together a great tutorial on how to create an eco-friendly cuff. I posted this tutorial in March but it's one of my favorites and I wanted to share it again.

Eco-Friendly Sweater Cuff

What You’ll need:

Sweater fabric - Your local Goodwill or other thrift stores will carry sweaters of all kinds in fairly good condition. Choose sweaters that have a tight weave - cashmere works best because it’s natural and VERY soft. You’d be surprised what you’ll find while at the thrift shop. They carry some very nice items, and you could easily spend hours there. You’ll have to remind yourself to keep on track and repeat to yourself, “I’m shopping for sweaters, I’m shopping for sweaters!”

Yarn - This can also be found at your local thrift shop.

Embellishments - anything will do…a favorite button or pin, or a stash of beads works nicely.

Step 1:

Gather your sweater fabric together and choose colors that you feel will go together nicely. Here I have 4 sweaters in a creamy cashmere, a taupe cashmere, a camel colored cotton cable knit (say that three times fast!) blend, and apple green mohair blend. I ended up using all sweaters except the taupe cashmere on this project.

Step 2:

Now your ready to design the length, style and circumference of your cuff!

Cut several strips of sweater fabric of the same length and lay them out, making sure there are enough strips to cover the circumference of your forearm.

I find that if you use the ribbed areas of the sweater, it holds nicely when you sew the pieces together.

Choose the yarn you’ll be using. Here I’m using bright mustard, rust and olive colors in a 100% wool blend. Notice that my yarn contrasts with the natural colors of the cuff material. You can use whatever yarn color suits your fancy.

Step 3:

Using a very simple overstitch, stitch your cuff pieces together lengthwise. This step takes a little while. I’d say this cuff took me 2.5 hours to stitch. Grab a cup of tea, put on your favorite TV show, and stitch away.

Make sure to overstitch the top and bottom of the cuff too, to deter any fraying.

Once you finish sewing, you’re almost done! Notice how pretty and sinewy the stitches contrast against the fabric on your cuff. It will look very organic and if some of the ends fray a little bit, that’s o.k! It will add to the character of your cuff.

Step 4:

This is my favorite step. Gather together some trinkets for embellishing your cuff. I found these at garage sales and on Etsy. I chose the enameled calico cat pin for this cuff. I’ve decided to name him Cecil. I love the mustardy yellow color on Cecil the cat’s fur. I used him as my cuff’s center-of-attention.

Step 5:

Your done! Now you have an eco-friendly cuff that will look beautiful with a sweater and a pair of jeans. And it will keep your wrist warm too!

What Do You Want To See Allover Art Create?

If you're an artist or artisan and you've never done an art and craft show, you should really try doing one! This past weekend I had a booth at Artsplosure 2009 in downtown Raleigh. Here's a big THANK YOU to all of you who stopped by to say 'hi'. :) The show was a HUGE success for me; well at least on Saturday. Sunday it was rainy, windy, and cold and after a few hours Indie and I packed up and left. About 2/3 of the other artists there did the same; it was miserable. Indie actually came along on Sunday and had a great time at his first show until we both started shivering.

Saturday at the show was PACKED even though there were four sudden downpours. I apologize again to the woman who got soaked when a breeze dumped the water that had pooled on my awning square in her face. I sold half my inventory and now have a large number of custom orders to complete. My Etsy shop is looking a little depleted and sad with so many listings gone.

Allover Art needs your help! Since half of my inventory found new homes on Saturday, I'm working like mad to build it back up, and I want to hear what you want. • Who are you (actual name/and or shop name)?

My name is Joanna Kapica. And I am owner of www.JoannasPhotography.etsy.com store.

• What do you create?

Photography is my main field of interest. I take photographs mainly of nature. I like to capture details of plants and flowers. Show their texture, colors and forms.
My macro photography also covers subjects like household items, that photographed at specific angles can give very interesting effects.

• Where are you located?

I live and create in Raleigh, NC. Most of my photographs are taken also in this area.

• When did you start creating?

There was always something I liked to create. It started with knitting in age of about 7. I still knit, in my free time. I have done some drawing in high school.
Photography was something that came later. I always wanted to explore it more, but for a long time I did not have a camera myself (sometimes I borrowed my parents simple point and shoot film camera). And after I had purchased my first camera I started to discover that it really brings me a great amount of satisfaction to take and process pictures. And this is how it started, about 5 years ago.
From then on I just kept trying different ways and learned different techniques. I still learn. There is always something new, something I can learn and apply to my style.

• Why did you choose your shop name?

My shop name simply was created by combining my first name and the word photography. The store was created for my photography, so this way it reflects my main interest and me as an owner. Also- I think it’s easy to remember.

• What inspires you?

I find my inspiration in almost everything around me. All colors and shapes in nature attract my attention. Shapes of every day used items attract me for their texture and form.

• What is the most time consuming part of your craft?

I think the post processing is the most time consuming part. I like to take a photo and usually I have a few versions of its final look. I give myself time to think of what would look the best. So sometimes it takes me even a few days to try to apply specific editing to get the final and most satisfying look to me.

• What is your most popular item that you create (and why do you think it is so popular)?

One of the most popular items in my store is the print “Big Big World”. It’s a photograph taken during my vacation at the Outer Banks in NC. This image has a pretty specific meaning to me. Taken just before big storm came, when the sky was covered with heavy dark blue clouds, it shows how fragile a human being can be against the forces of nature. It is just my interpretation.
I have heard different from some people, who have seen this image.

• How do you acquire new clients?

I try to advertise my shop through Etsy- by participating in forums, creating treasuries. I post on Twitter about any new listings, re-listings, etc. I also use my blog (www.joannaphotography.wordpress.com) and facebook to advertise my work.
I try to participate in other type of venues, like photo exhibition and contest, which one of the latest I have submitted my work was an event called “Postcards From the Edge
A Benefit for Visual AIDS”. It was an event where I donated one of my pieces to be shown and sold. All proceeds from this benefit will support Visual AIDS (more info on their website: http://www.thebody.com/visualaids/index.html)

Artsplosure 2009 is this weekend and Allover Art will be there! "The 30th Celebration of Artsplosure The Raleigh Arts Festival will take place on May 16 and 17, 2009 in downtown Raleigh. Join us as we celebrate three decades of bringing the best in visual and performing art to the community!" Here's a little more about Artsplosure from the festival website.

Artsplosure's mission is to produce high quality annual festivals that celebrate excellence in the performing and visual arts; to promote and bring recognition to national, regional, and local artists; and to bring artists and the larger community together to improve the quality of life and cultural environment.

Artsplosure was conceived in 1978 by subcommittees of the newly formed City of Raleigh Arts Commission who were planning a citywide arts festival that would combine an "explosion" of art activity with people's "exposure" to all types of art. The following year, Artsplosure was incorporated to produce high quality and accessible arts festivals and to identify, nurture, and showcase artists seeking to reach wider audiences. Each week I run a blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday features either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. I've expanded the Workshop Wednesday feature to include photos of artists' workspaces or studios. It's been difficult to regularly find tutorials and snapshots of an artist's creative process, so I'm hoping that by expanding the Workshop Wednesday I'll be able to feature more artists and artisans. Plus, it's always interesting to get a peek inside another artist's creative space. :)

Today's studio feature is Gretchen of WhiteHopeDesigns. Gretchen creates jewelry, aprons, bags, and softies. Here's what she had to say about herself and her work.

I am mommy to a 2-yr-old named Layla and wife to a soldier with the 82nd Airborne Division. We are originally from Tampa, Fl but "Home is where the Army sends you" so we live here in NC. Honestly, I'd rather be at the beach. I am lucky enough to be able to stay home with my daughter and work full time on my crafts. This is so much better than punching a clock! My crafts are my creative outlet, my break from a "terrible two" and my distraction during long deployments.

Gretchen was gracious enough to open the doors to her studio and give us a peek at her creative space. When asked about where she creates all her fabulous work, this is what she had to say.

What I do in my Workshop/Studio: I do pretty much anything I can get my hands into; sew bags and aprons, make jewelry, scrapbook, paint, embroider, color with my 2-yr-old Layla, and (unfortunately) pay my bills. Right now, I'm working on a new bag design that came to me in my sleep. I'm also teaching my husband how to make jewelry. He really likes it and I think it's a good change from guns and ammo with the Army all day! My studio is the one place in the house that is all mine! I don't have to share if I don't want to. I can make a huge mess and just shut the door. I can be quiet and be myself!

Today Is My One Year Wedding Anniversary

Today's post is a personal one. :) My husband, Matt, and I were married one year ago today on May 10th, 2008 at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, NC.

We met at the 42nd Street Oyster Bar in downtown Raleigh on my 23rd birthday. I had invited several of my friends out to dinner and one friend brought Matt along to join in the festivities. Despite Matt having an unsettled stomach which he fought off with a plate of mashed potatoes, he and I discovered that we shared a common past of collegiate swimming and ultimate frisbee. Matt was involved with coordinating games for RC Ultimate, and at the end of the meal told me to obtain his email from our mutual friend if I was interested in playing. Fortunately, I was not intimidated by Matt's good looks and charm, and always welcomed an opportunity to throw an elbow or two. The following week I sent Matt a witty email, which prompted numerous novelesque email exchanges, until Matt smoothly asked me out to dinner a week and a half later; and the rest is history.

On a gorgeous day in May we were married. Here are a handful of my favorite photos from our wedding. Enjoy! :)

Designers Downtown Market And A Sneek Peek

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 9th, marks the second day of the Designers Downtown Market! The market will be located in downtown Raleigh, so all you fellow North Carolinians won't want to miss it.

The Designers Downtown Market features fine locally made arts and crafts with an outdoor big city feel. The vendors showcase some of the finest handcrafted arts and crafts in the area: jewelry, pottery, apparel, stained glass, paper crafts and more! There are five shows throughout the year. Every show is different, with new artists and craftspeople coming in every event. Browse the vendor list on the Designers Downtown Market site to find out who will be at the upcoming Market.

The market will take place at 509 N. West Street in the parking lot of Ornamentea and the surrounding area from 9am - 3pm. Come by and check it out! I will have a few show specials going on.

And in other exciting news, you may have noticed that I've added a new section to my Etsy shop called "Earrings (Coming Soon)". Right now the section is empty, but I have been listening to you and have begun working on adding earrings to my wearable art collection! I should start listing a few pairs by the beginning of next week. Here's a sneak peek.

New Pet Portrait Pendant

Meet Puddles; an adorable photogenic cat who has now been immortalized in a pendant.

Puddles has been recreated in this original miniature painting which was done with high quality acrylic paints on a wooden tile. The painting was then sealed on every surface, and then received a high-gloss resin finish which gives it a very polished look. The finished effect is similar to that of a heavy glass pendant, but it is actually very lightweight. The pendant features a medium silver-plated aanraku bail securely fastened to the back, and comes with an 18 inch (45.72 cm) beige Chinese silk cord with a lobster claw clasp.

I LOVE doing these pet portrait pendants! Being an animal-lover and owner of two rescue dogs myself, it brings me great joy to create something of such meaning for another.

Workshop Wednesday

Each week I run a blog series titled Workshop Wednesday. Each Wednesday features either a tutorial by yours truly or another talented artist or artisan, or a snapshot of an artist's creative process. I've expanded the Workshop Wednesday feature to include photos of artists' workspaces or studios. It's been difficult to regularly find tutorials and snapshots of an artist's creative process, so I'm hoping that by expanding the Workshop Wednesday I'll be able to feature more artists and artisans. Plus, it's always interesting to get a peek inside another artist's creative space. :)

My first studio space post feature's Beth of UberArt. Here's what she has to say about her space.

I always enjoy seeing pictures and reading about other people's creative spaces. I'm glad to have a room to call my own...it wasn't always like that. In our first house, I shared a tiny 8 x 9 room with the computer desk. If my husband was working at the desk and I was at my work table, we'd bump the backs of our chairs into each other! I utilized every square inch of my space, though.

I spend a lot of time sitting in this chair working on the computer! (Not the little blue chair, the big one! The little one is for my creative assistant.)

This is where the journals and my other works of art are born! I love my "new" floor lamp inherited from my grandmother. It's true vintage! And behold, I can see what I'm doing now!!

Here is the studio watchdog, hard at work! Don't let him fool you, no one can enter or leave the room without his knowledge. He sleeps with one eye open. Sometimes I try to sneak by him to get a snack from the kitchen. Just when I think I've been successful, he usually appears quite suddenly behind me in the pantry! "Whatcha got there, mum? Any to share?"

My sewing table (which is not often used!) and my "resource center". My husband built the bookcase for me. I got sick of the cheap store bought ones that warp under the heavy weight of my art books. I had to keep flipping the shelves over to bend them in the opposite direction! This bookcase is solid wood, and guess what? No warped shelves! Yeah!

Have You Heard Of The Thursday Sweet Treat?

If you haven't checked out the Thursday Sweet Treat blog yet, you are missing out.

The Thursday Sweet Treat is "a place for artists and writers to dream, support one another and share the work they love to create." Natasha of DoodleStar is the talented and charismatic artist who put this blog together. About the blog she says "A theme is posted every Friday and then the people who choose to showcase their work post their new creations on the following Thursday! Come join us!"

Anyone can participate, and as someone who has been a part of this endeavor the past few months, it really is a lot of fun. For example, one theme was 'Artistic Safari' for which I created this piece, Safari Sunset Hand-Painted Art Pendant Necklace. So many talented artists showcase their work every Thursday, and it's thrilling to see how each artist interprets the weekly theme.

A new theme will be posted this Friday after new work is showcased on Thursday, so be sure to keep checking out the blog to get inspired! There will be instructions with the new theme on how to enter.

The Thursday Sweet Treat also has a weekly segment in addition to the inspirational themes called the "Artist Play Date." Each Wednesday the blog will feature an artist and his or her artistic process or a tutorial. There will also be a giveaway featuring something from that artist's shop.

How To Install A Social Bookmarking Tool On Your Blog

Yesterday I was at the Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival in Cary all day, so I'm a little wiped. Thank you to all of your who came out! :) It was a successful show and a beautiful day, but quite warm in the afternoon. I'm taking a breather today, so I'm re-posting a previous post about how to install a social bookmarking tool on your blog. Come back tomorrow for the Monday Must-Have feature! Have a wonderful day.

Last night I posted a question in the Etsy forums about social bookmarking and blogs. I wanted to know how I could add a button or some sort of tool to the end of each post that would allow someone to socially bookmark and share my posts with other sites. I received a few different answers, but my favorite response was from Joanna of JoannasPhotography. She introduced me to "Add This," which helped me install exactly what I was looking for.

Here's a brief tutorial of how to add a social bookmarking tool button to each post in your blog using "Add This." Click on any of the images in this post to make them larger.

Go to http://www.addthis.com/ and click on the big orange "Get Your Button" button. :) The button you will want will be the "sharing/bookmarking button." Choose how you want your button to look and choose "on a blog" for the "where." Next you can choose your blogging platform; TypePad, Blogger, WordPress, or Other. I chose Blogger, so the rest of the tutorial is specific to Blogger. Finally, click "get your button code."

Next you will want to scroll down to "Blog Post Button" to insert the code into your blog template that will create a button at the bottom of every post. Go to the "Layout" part of your blog, and click on "Edit HTML." At this point you will want to backup you Blogger template just in case something wacky happens while you are editing the HTML. Click on "Download Full Template" (1 - see image below). Your computer may handle it differently, but mine opened the download with Internet Explorer, which I then saved to my desktop as an xml file. Once you have saved the template, go back to the blog layout and click the box next to "Expand Widget Templates"(2 - see image below).

Then, hold down the "control" button and the "F" button at the same time. This will open up a search toolbar at the bottom of the page (3 - see below). Copy and paste the text "Add This" asks you to look for. The text you are looking for will be highlighted in the html (4 - see below).
Copy the button code from the "Add This" site and paste it immediately behind the highlighted html text. Click "save template" and go check out your new social bookmarking tool! It should be at the end of every post.

The weather tomorrow here in central NC is going to be GORGEOUS! Come out to Bond Park in Cary for the Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival and pay a visit to Allover Art. The festival runs from 9am-5pm. Check out all the great fun that will be happening from the town of Cary website!

NCSU College of Design Public Art Installation
Students from the North Carolina State University College of Design are creating a temporary public art installation to be displayed at Bond Park as part of the Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival celebration. "Discovery" of ordinary structures in unusual places can encourage people to think about their surroundings, the environment, and our impact on the earth. Hopefully, the installation presence will suggest an ambiguity of time. What we witness in the present moment alludes to our memories of the past as well as our curiosity about and predictions for the future. Associate Professor Dana Raymond's students will create thought provoking and intriguing installations to be discovered and enjoyed by the Festival and Park visitors.
